With new health and safety sentencing guidelines coming into force at the start of the year, and fines for health and safety negligence reaching unprecedented levels – it has never been a more appropriate and relevant time to take a take a step back and review your compliance management.
The much publicised conviction of G4S Cash Solutions (UK) at the start of September 2016 for failing to protect its workers from the risk of Legionnaires’ disease, saw them receive a substantial £1.8 million fine.
The size of this fine could in part be due to the new health and safety sentencing guidelines– which see the turnover of the organisation being taken into account when calculating the size of the fine – in a bid, “to bring the message home to the directors and shareholders of offending organisations.”
